Chat with Becky of Maggie Moore Studio

Becky is one half of Maggie Moore Studio, along with her cousin Sam. You may see too much of her counting down your favorite cards over on Instagram, but how much do you know about her? In the spring, we had a chat with Sam to get to know her better, and since September is kind of quiet, we thought it would be fun to have a chat with Becky too.

Origin Story: How did you end up as co-founder of Maggie Moore?

Like Sam, I went to design school inspired by our grandmother Maggie Moore. I chose Interior Design, but after so many years designing hospitality projects, there was very little design and lots of project management and getting buried in budgets and BS. Not as glamorous as you might think! I needed a creative outlet and started messing around with watercolor lettering and eventually picked up an iPad. After Sam had her kids, we decided to join forces with the handful of designs we were working on and start Maggie Moore Studio.

What are your three favorite items in the Maggie Moore shop right now?

1. I may be from Boston but I've lived in Baltimore for over 20 years now, and I love the quirky food here that is so Maryland. When our Emotional Support Orange Crush sticker was a hit, we had to add an Emotional Support Snowball sticker too.
2. Another Maggie Moore sticker I'm loving is our new East Coast Girl Tote. It's so me!
3. This is a new card that hasn't got enough love yet and I think it's so perfectly Baltimore! I Love You More than ROFO Chicken! I love our cards that have references that only a local would appreciate.

What’s your favorite thing you’ve designed?

Probably the " I Love You Over the Green Monstah and Back" card. I could walk to Fenway from my childhood home, and I've been a lifelong Red Sox fan. I love it anytime someone buys that one. It's So Good, So Good, So Good!

What’s an underrated card or sticker you think people should notice?

Let's face it, I'm a GenXer in perimenopause with few fucks left to give. I love the " Don't Fuck With Me I'm Gen X" sticker. I really just designed it for myself, but I wish more people would notice it.

What’s your go-to gift that always works at Maggie Moore?

Maggie Moore Art prints make great gifts, but in particular our decades prints are great for a milestone birthday. You can get an 80's or 90's print, buy a simple frame, and grab a fun trivia game to go with it. Here are some Moore Gift Ideas. We really think about this stuff!

 Favorite Holiday season for cards?

Valentine's Day! I think Love cards are really the best for sending to your true love or your bestie. And the best thing about them is that you can send them anytime to let someone know you're thinking of them.

What’s your current obsession (books, TV, Podcasts, Music, Food?)

I'm always listening to podcasts. My faves are Amy Poehler's Good Hang, Conan O'Brien Needs a Friend and Smartless.

My husband and I are doing a rewatch of 30 Rock, and it's still Laugh Out Loud Funny.

I read a ton. Some of my favorites lately: The Amateur by Chris Bohjalian, Yesteryear by Caro Claire Burke (I think it's worth the hype), Strangers by Belle Burden (man, her husband was an asshole), and The Shampoo Effect by Jenny Jackson.

And just give me all the 80's music!

Coffee/Tea order?

Well, first of all, my Coffee always has to be iced even in January. The Double Dirty Chai from the Daily Grind in Fells Point is pretty damn good, so if I'm in the area I have to get one. And any drink of the month from Corner Pantry.

Our family loves cake! What’s your favorite kind of cake?

I'm the weird one on this side of the family because my Dad's side is obsessed with ice cream, and it's a family trait. So I would say my favorite cake is ice cream cake. Last year at my Uncle Peter's 80th, we had an ice cream cake with coffee ice cream and mint chocolate chip, which sounds so wrong, but I'm still dreaming about it a year later.

What keeps you busy when you’re not being a boss lady?

I am a total geek for genealogy! I know, it's so nerdy. I'm busy trying to compile years of research into family history books so I can share all this info and hopefully get other family members excited about it. I would love a second job getting paid to research family history. And those people that use Genetic Genealogy to solve crimes! Jealous! I could totally track down a serial killer.

What do you do to unwind when you have the time?

Always got my nose in my Kindle, and I like to do word puzzles. Again, so nerdy but I have a subscription to Games Magazine, and I get so excited when it comes in the mail so I can do more crossword puzzles. Hahahaha!

What’s something our customers don’t realize about running Maggie Moore?

Just like in my past life as an interior designer, not much time is spent designing! There's a lot of behind-the-scenes each week, getting out orders, marketing to new stores and our customers, bookkeeping, and checking inventory. Usually the time I have to design is in front of the TV at night.

What’s your favorite thing about Maggie Moore?

I love coming up with an idea, sketching it out, finalizing the design, sending it off to print, and seeing it in the hands of customers in a relatively short amount of time. The hospitality design projects I worked on would sometimes take up to 5 years to see the finished product! There's no greater feeling than seeing someone pick up a card you thought up and get a good laugh.

What’s your best customer interaction story?

I love markets because they get us out of the Studio and we can interact with our Maggie Moore fans!

Our Sometimes You Just Have to Say What The Fuck stickers and cards always get a great reaction, and sometimes they are in the top market sellers. When people pick them up, they often have to buy more than one, and it's usually an older, conservative-looking woman. We're worried she'll be offended, and then she'll buy ten! Or the local vet who decided to buy a WTF sticker for everyone in his office.

What question do you get asked most at a local market?

Besides, "Do you design these?" (YES!), we often get a lot of questions about local references like, "What are Lemon Sticks?" or "Are Orange Crushes a Maryland thing?"

What are your dream products you would like to design if you had Moore time?

I love the line we have developed of cards, stickers, prints, and notepads with a local twist that celebrate your happy places. I'd like to use what people are already loving, take it to the next level with notebooks, pens, wrapping paper and Moore. I have so many ideas, and I feel like we can't do it all fast enough! And then I just design more cards.

Favorite Memory of our G-Mom

When I was growing up in Boston, G-Mom was my long-distance Gramom, so I loved when she would come to visit. I would be bouncing off the walls in anticipation of her arrival. She always packed her art supplies, and she would park herself for the week at our dining room table with her sketch pads, markers, and paints, and I loved watching her or creating art with her. And during the week, there would always be a visit to an art supply store to pick out new goodies.
